Xero AI in Slack: get answers on invoices and bank transactions
Connect Xero to Toby once, then ask about invoices and bank transactions in a Slack channel, and Toby reads Xero and replies in the thread.

Xero AI in Slack means you connect Xero to Toby, an AI coworker in Slack and Microsoft Teams, once. Then you ask in a channel, in plain English, about your invoices and bank transactions. Toby reads Xero and replies in the thread. Toby is not your accountant.
This post is the explainer and the how-to. The Xero integration page is the short reference. Here we cover the questions you can ask, the setup steps, and what to check before you connect any AI to your books.
What can you ask Xero from Slack?
You can ask about two things: invoices and bank transactions. Once you connect Xero, the assistant reads both.
You ask the way you would ask a colleague. The assistant breaks the request into steps, reads Xero, and posts the answer in the thread. Here are two requests. They are plain reads, and no results are shown.
Example, asked in a channel after mentioning Toby:
- What invoices do we have in Xero?
- What bank transactions are in Xero?
These are lookups. Treat each reply as a first look, and check the figures in Xero before they go into a report or a decision.
How do you connect Xero to Slack?
You connect Xero once from the dashboard. Setup takes about two minutes in total, and you need your own Xero organisation first.
- Sign in with Slack or Microsoft Teams and choose which channels the assistant can see.
- Open the dashboard and pick Xero from the list of connections.
- Sign in on Xero’s own screen and allow access to your organisation. You approve each connection by name.
- Ask it something. Mention it in a channel it can see, or in a thread where the work is already being discussed.
Your Slack workspace may limit who can add apps. Slack’s guide to apps says any member can install apps by default, but owners and admins can restrict it. If you cannot install, you may be able to submit an app request instead.
What should you check before you connect any AI to your books?
Treat it like giving a new colleague access to your accounts. Decide who connects it, and start small.
- Pick the right person to connect it. That is usually whoever already holds the Xero login, such as a finance lead or the owner.
- Start with questions that only look things up. Reading invoices and bank transactions is the one Xero job covered here.
- Keep a person approving anything that goes out under your name. Toby asks before anything goes out under your name.
- Check your own policies. If your organisation has rules about who may access financial records, read them before you connect.
- Check the plan price. The cost section below has the current numbers.
- Know how to switch it off. You can disconnect a tool from the dashboard whenever you want.
Slack’s own advice is to install apps only from services you trust. Keep your bookkeeper in the loop as well. They still sign off.
How is asking an AI different from Xero’s reports or a notification app?
Asking suits a one-off lookup. Xero’s own reports stay the source of truth, and an assistant is a convenience for quick questions.
If you searched for a Xero Slack integration, you probably want one of two things: alerts or answers. An alert is set up in advance and says the same thing each time. A question is whatever you need today, asked in the channel where the conversation is already happening.
A reply from any AI tool can be wrong, so check anything important in Xero itself. Here is how we would split the work.
| What you need | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Figures you will file or sign off | Xero’s own reports |
| A quick lookup in the middle of a conversation | Asking in the Slack channel |
| The same alert every time a set event happens | A notification set up for that one alert |
| A decision about what the numbers mean | A person |
We would not give any AI a job where a wrong answer is expensive. For a quick look at an invoice or a bank transaction, asking keeps the question in the thread where the conversation is.
What does it cost?
You can start free. You get 2,000 credits, with no card and no sales call. These are the prices on the pricing page as of 12 October 2026, in US dollars.
- Starter is $25 a month for 20,000 credits.
- Plus is $50 a month for 40,000 credits.
- Bigger tiers are listed on the pricing page.
One credit pool covers the whole workspace, so nobody pays per seat. Every feature and every connection is on every plan, so connecting Xero adds no fee.
Your own Xero subscription is separate. You can cancel any time from the dashboard.
Where does Toby fit?
Toby is an AI coworker that lives in Slack or Microsoft Teams. It connects to the tools a team already pays for and takes jobs off people’s plates. You message it in plain English, and it posts the finished result in the thread.
For a team that lives in Slack, a quick look at Xero invoices or bank transactions is one of those jobs. It does not sign off your books. To see it work before you decide, book a demo or read what an AI employee is.
Xero is a trademark of Xero Limited.
Questions
Do I need a Xero subscription?
Yes. You connect your own Xero organisation, so you need your own Xero subscription. It does not come with one.
Does Toby work in Microsoft Teams too?
Yes. It works the same way in Slack and in Microsoft Teams. One credit pool and one set of connected tools cover both.
Is Toby an accountant or a bookkeeper?
No. Toby reads Xero invoices and bank transactions when you connect Xero. Toby is not your accountant. Your bookkeeper still signs off.
What does it cost?
You start with 2,000 free credits and no card. Plans then begin at $25 a month for the whole workspace, and the pricing page lists every tier.
Can I disconnect Xero?
Yes. You can disconnect a tool from the dashboard whenever you want.
